Planned events:

Saturday 20th July – We plan to meet up with the bus at the Hayfield car park in Hayfield Lane at 11.00 and head down to Sumburgh via various side roads, depending on the time available. We have booked lunch in the Dinning Room at the Sumburgh Hotel for a change, to give us more room than eating in the bar area. Lunch is booked for 13.00. Please make your choices from the attached menu and phone them in to Joy on 01595 696 491 or email her at joygoodlad@btinternet.com by Wednesday 17th June.

There will be a cost of £15 per person for the trip as usual, which will include the meal and a drink of choice on arrival. We may take a turn around Jarlshof or the Quendale Mill on the way home, depending on the weather.

Fundraising for MRI scanner

Harriet, one of our committee members, has designed a hat using the colours from the logo for the MRI scanner appeal. Her son Billy has helped to put the “Harriet’s Hat” pattern into print and it’s now available from various local outlets at £4, or online. Jamieson and Smith have made up packs of the wool needed to knit a hat, and are donating the money to the MRI fund. Harriet has set up a group of knitters who meet in the Gilbert Bain café, every fortnight on a Thursday evening, to knit hats and other items to make use of wool that has been donated for the cause. More information is available on the MRI Maakers Facebook page at MRI Maakers . Anyone who can knit is welcome to start knitting for the appeal.

Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland - (CHSS)
As many of you will know we are an independent stroke support group with our own committee and bank account, but we are affiliated to Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, who pay our yearly Public Liability Insurance, and we advertise their support services regularly through our monthly newsletter. They currently have the slogan of “No life half lived” and are updating and changing their services. This includes the affiliated support groups and we have been invited to send two representatives from our support group to join in a video conference meeting to discuss the future of the affiliated groups, and what we can expect from CHSS in the future. This is what they would like to discuss

·         What currently works well within the running of your group

·         What issues do you face – referrals, finance, fundraising, GDPR, safeguarding

·         What could be improved and what can we (CHSS) do to support this

·         Support you would want from us (CHSS) -  what are your priorities

It’s a chance for our voice to be heard. CHSS used to send up a representative from Head Office to our AGM each year, and they were always impressed by the range of activities we provide, the facilities we use, and the inclusive nature of the group. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 29th May from 14.00 – 16.00. If anyone would like to represent us let Dorothy know, or if you have any issues you would like us to bring up at the meeting let us know.

Stroke Support Group Booklet
Many thanks to Eston, Olga, Gundel and Mike who have contributed their stories for the updated “Introducing the Shetland Stroke Support Group” booklet. Some of the stories from the last booklet have been carried over to the new one, and the new stories added. We have a lovely new group photo for the front cover and many of the photos inside have been updated too.

The new booklets have now arrived and look great, so they will be available to see on the summer outings, and will be given out to all new stroke patients from now on.
