Planned events:

Thursday the 18th of April at 7pm the Shetland Mandolin Band will be coming to entertain us at Quoys. We’re looking forward to hearing them again,  it’s always a very lightsome evening and they often bring some of their CD’s for sale as well. There will be no charge for the evening, but as always donations will be gratefully received for the group funds and tea/coffee and homebakes will be served. Please ring Joy on 01595 696 491 if you require transport for the event.

We are grateful to the New Harbour Café for a further donation to the stroke group funds of £19.40 from the sale of carrier bags at the café.

Stroke Support Group Booklet
Many thanks to Eston, Olga, Gundel and Mike who have contributed their stories for the updated “Introducing the Shetland Stroke Support Group” booklet. Some of the stories from the last booklet have been carried over to the new one, and the new stories added. We have a lovely new group photo for the front cover and many of the photos inside have been updated too. We’re hoping to have the new booklets printed soon, and copies will be available to see at the group events.

Yoga classes
Disability Shetland have been running a Yoga class for a number of years attended by people who have various health conditions. They have contacted us to see if anyone from the stroke support group would be interested in going along. The class is held on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 11am in Market House, the next block starts on the 18th September.  A lot of the movements are done sitting in a chair and some are done while standing, for those who are able, they also do some exercises on the floor but these can be modified for sitting as well. A few years ago a DVD called “Stretch and Breathe” was released in aid of Disability Shetland and we used it a couple of times at events at Quoys, it gives an idea of what the sessions are like.

Information on Energy savings
Many of us worry about the cost of keeping our homes warm at this time of year, and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau have contacted us to say that they are offering advice on understanding energy bills, switching energy suppliers, installing renewables, managing fuel debt and accessing grants and loans for things like insulation, draught proofing and boilers. If you would like more information please contact Isa Kristiansen-Bragg, Community Engagement Officer, Warmer Homes Shetland, Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau 01595 694696.

Market House Carers Group at Fjara
The Market House Carers Group now meet at the Fjara Cafe Bar on the first Tuesday of each month from 10.30 – 12.00. If you are a carer you are invited to join them for a cuppa, some cake and a blether! The group is open to all unpaid carers and everyone is welcome.

Self Help for Stroke website
Selfhelp4stroke is a free self management website for anyone who has had a stroke, and can be found at This is a free resource and the information is displayed in video, audio and interactive formats. Many of the resources are also downloadable.
