Planned events:

Saturday 18th August we plan to meet up with the bus at the Hayfield House carpark in Hayfield lane at 11.00. We are booked in at the Walls Hall for one of their special meals at 12.30, so please make your choices from the attached menu and phone them in to Joy on 01595 696 491 or email her on by Wednesday 15th August. After lunch we hope to have a run through Skeld and Reawick on the way back to town. There will be a cost of £15 per person for the trip, which includes the meal and a drink of your choice on arrival at the Hall.

We are grateful to the New Harbour cafe for sending us another donation of £30, from the sale of carrier bags to their customers.

Isabel Fraser, one of our committee members, has undertaken a Walk Your Way fundraising challenge. She managed to walk a total of 26.2 miles and raised an amazing £135 for the group funds. So well done Isabel!

Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland
CHSS have recently relaunched their website with their new vision for supporting people with chest, heart and stroke conditions in Scotland, under the heading of No Life Half Lived. For more information on how they can help please visit their website at

CHSS are also undertaking a National survey of people living with chest and heart conditions and those who have had strokes and have sent us some copies of the survey. If you would like to fill one in please let us know, and we can provide a copy, along with a prepaid envelope. The survey can also be completed online at The surveys should be completed online or returned by post before 31st July. The responses will be used to plan the future services of CHSS around the needs of those affected by these conditions.

Yoga classes
Disability Shetland have been running a Yoga class for a number of years attended by people who have various health conditions. They have contacted us to see if anyone from the stroke support group would be interested in going along. The class is held on Tuesday mornings from 10am to 11am in Market House, the next block starts on the 18th September.  A lot of the movements are done sitting in a chair and some are done while standing, for those who are able, they also do some exercises on the floor but these can be modified for sitting as well. A few years ago a DVD called “Stretch and Breathe” was recorded in aid of Disability Shetland and we used it a couple of times at events at Quoys, it gives an idea of what the sessions are like.

Market House Carers Group at Fjara
The Market House Carers Group now meet at the Fjara Cafe Bar on the first Tuesday of each month from 10.30 – 12.00. If you are a carer you are invited to join them for a cuppa, some cake and a blether! The group is open to all unpaid carers and everyone is welcome.
